KIT FOR SCRAPIE GENOTYPING

For the analysis and testing of ovine PrP codons 136, 154 and 171 associated with scrapie (ovine transmissible spongiform encephalopathy) susceptibility in sheep.

Orchid Cellmark has successfully genotyped over 1,000,000 sheep for government scrapie programmes throughout Europe, using a robust proprietary assay.

This assay is now available as our Ovine PrP Genotyping Kit, specifically formulated to provide laboratories – with low to medium throughput – requirements a cost effective and highly accurate method of testing local sheep flocks for scrapie susceptibility.

From blood samples, the assay (patent-pending) returns clinical quality genotyping of the 4 single nucleotide polymorphisms within the prion protein gene associated with scrapie susceptibility. The 4 polymorphic positions combine to describe 5 common haplotypes and 15 composite genotypes associated with the disease. The Ovine PrP Genotyping Kit enables clear identification of the animal’s genotype and permits an informed breeding decision to be made.

As well as blood samples the technology in the Ovine PrP Genotyping Kit has also been successfully applied to tissue and semen samples.
